Carrier vs Trane — Honest Comparison from Someone Who Installs Both
Both are top-tier. The differences are smaller than the marketing makes them sound.
Carrier and Trane are the two heavyweights of residential HVAC. We install and service both. Here's the honest comparison without the brand marketing.
Reliability
Tie. Both use Copeland scroll compressors (Carrier) or in-house scrolls (Trane Climatuff) that perform comparably over a 15-year service life. Major failures are evenly distributed across both brands in our service records.
Parts availability
Tie on the Treasure Coast. Carrier and Trane both have local distributors. Generic capacitors, contactors, and motors fit both. Brand-specific boards and ECM modules are 24–48 hours either way.
Warranty
Tie. Both offer 10-year parts warranties when registered within 90 days, 1-year labor from the installing dealer (extendable).
Pricing
Trane runs about 5–10% more than equivalent Carrier in our market. Trane's marketing premium ('It's hard to stop a Trane') keeps prices up. Carrier delivers equal performance for slightly less.
Communicating platforms
Carrier Infinity vs Trane ComfortLink II — feature parity. Carrier Infinity Touch is a slightly nicer user interface in our opinion. Both lock you into proprietary thermostats and sensors.
Our default recommendation
Carrier for most Treasure Coast homes — same reliability, slightly better price, and we already carry Carrier parts on the truck. Trane is an equally good choice if you have a brand preference or your house already has Trane ductwork sized for it.
Maritime Air Co. is an official Carrier dealer on Florida's Treasure Coast.
