Carrier Thermostat Troubleshooting
Most thermostat problems are actually power problems. Here's how to tell.
Blank thermostat screen
On a battery thermostat: replace batteries first. On a 24V-powered thermostat: a tripped float switch in the air handler kills 24V power to the thermostat as a safety. Check the drain line and clear the trap. Still blank? Check the breaker, the air handler door safety switch, and the transformer.
Thermostat shows temperature but won't cool
Make sure mode is set to COOL and setpoint is below room temp. Check the outdoor disconnect (sometimes pulled during yard work). Listen for the indoor blower — if it runs but no cold air, the outdoor isn't getting the 'Y' signal. That's a contactor, capacitor, or wiring issue.
Infinity Touch displays a code
Common codes:
- 178 / 184 — communication fault between thermostat and outdoor (loose A/B wire)
- 45 — outdoor control box failure
- 110 — low pressure switch open (refrigerant leak or restriction)
- 173 — outdoor temp sensor fault
- 127 — system not configured (after firmware update or board replacement)
Wi-Fi thermostat lost connection
Power cycle the thermostat (pull from base 30 seconds, reseat). Check router 2.4GHz band is active — most smart thermostats don't connect to 5GHz. Re-enter Wi-Fi credentials in the device menu.
