Carrier System Life Expectancy in Florida
12–18 years inland, 8–12 years coastal — but the variables that move those numbers are largely under your control.
Real-world Carrier lifespan ranges
Across hundreds of Carrier systems we've serviced on the Treasure Coast:
- Inland Carrier (Tradition, Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie West) with maintenance: 15–18 years
- Inland Carrier without maintenance: 10–13 years
- Coastal Carrier (Hutchinson Island, Orchid Island, barrier islands) with monthly rinses + maintenance: 12–15 years
- Coastal Carrier without coil rinses: 6–10 years (coastal corrosion is brutal)
- Carrier Infinity variable-speed: similar to standard Carrier in lifespan, but boards and ECM modules add mid-life repair cost
What shortens Carrier life the most
- Missed maintenance (filter, coil cleaning)
- Restricted airflow (closed vents, undersized return)
- Refrigerant leaks left unaddressed
- No surge protection in lightning country
- Salt air exposure without rinsing
- Wrong-sized system from original install (oversized cycles too short, undersized runs constantly)
When to repair vs replace
Rule of thumb: if the repair is more than 50% of replacement cost AND the system is 12+ years old, replace. If the repair is on the compressor or coil specifically, replacement almost always wins because both are about to need each other anyway.
