Company History

Rheem Manufacturing was founded in Emeryville, California in 1925 by brothers Richard and Donald Rheem. Today Rheem is privately held by Paloma Industries of Japan and is one of only two manufacturers that produces both HVAC equipment and water heaters under one roof, with major plants in Fort Smith, Arkansas (condensers) and Montgomery, Alabama (air handlers). Rheem also owns the Ruud brand — the equipment is identical.

Equipment Overview

Rheem's residential lineup is the Prestige (premium), Classic Plus (mid), and Classic (entry) series. Outdoor units use a copper-tube/aluminum-fin coil with Rheem's EcoNet communicating thermostat option on Prestige models. Compressors are typically Copeland Scroll.

Rheem Product Lines

Advantages

  • Excellent value — 10–20% less than Carrier or Trane for similar specifications
  • Copeland Scroll compressor (industry-standard reliable)
  • EcoNet platform offers genuine variable-speed at a lower price than Infinity or ComfortLink
  • Strong distribution and parts availability through Gemaire and Trane Supply
  • Same equipment as Ruud — buy whichever is priced better in your market

Disadvantages

  • Copper-tube/aluminum-fin coils are more susceptible to formicary corrosion in coastal areas than all-aluminum designs
  • EcoNet thermostats can be slow to release new firmware
  • Cabinet finish is not as durable as Trane or Carrier in salt environments
  • Classic-tier blower motors are not as robust as premium tiers

Expected Lifespan on the Treasure Coast

12–18 years on the Treasure Coast with annual maintenance and clean coils. Coastal exposure (within 1/2 mile of saltwater) shortens that to 8–12 years without aggressive condenser rinsing and protective coatings.

Maintenance Recommendations

  • Annual tune-up with capacitor microfarad test under load
  • Coil rinse every 3–6 months for coastal homes
  • Filter change every 30–60 days during cooling season
  • Drain line flush twice a year to prevent overflow trips
  • Refrigerant charge verification by superheat and subcooling
  • Electrical contactor and breaker amp-draw check

Common Rheem Repairs

  • Failed dual-run capacitor (most common single failure)
  • Pitted or welded contactor
  • Condenser fan motor seizure
  • Blower motor or ECM module fault
  • Refrigerant leak at brazed joint or Schrader core
  • Clogged primary drain line and float switch trip
  • TXV restriction after 8–12 years
  • Frozen evaporator coil from low charge or restricted airflow
  • EcoNet thermostat communication faults
  • Formicary corrosion leaks on indoor evaporator coils at 6–10 years

Florida Climate Considerations

Rheem is the most common value brand in Port St. Lucie's older neighborhoods (St. Lucie West, Lakewood Park, White City) and across budget-conscious replacements. The Prestige line is a legitimate alternative to Carrier Infinity at a meaningfully lower price.

Salt-Air Corrosion Considerations

Salt air is the single biggest killer of HVAC equipment on the Treasure Coast. Sodium chloride accelerates galvanic corrosion of copper coil tubing, aluminum fins, condenser fan grills, and even electrical lugs. Maritime Air Co. recommends coastal-grade coil coatings (Heresite, Bronz-Glow, ElectroFin) on any replacement within 1/2 mile of the ocean or Indian River Lagoon, plus quarterly fresh-water condenser rinses. This single practice often doubles outdoor unit life.

Energy Efficiency

Rheem covers SEER2 14.3 through 20.5. The Prestige RA20 inverter is the most efficient model and qualifies for FPL rebates.

Warranty Information

10-year registered parts warranty on the compressor and all functional parts. Rheem also offers a one-time conditional unit replacement warranty on Prestige models if the compressor fails in the first 10 years.

What Maritime Air Co. Thinks

Our professional opinion on Rheem

Rheem is the best value brand in the lineup. The Prestige series delivers 80–90% of Carrier Infinity performance at 70–80% of the price, and the Classic Plus is the smart-money pick for homeowners who want reliable two-stage cooling without paying for a top-tier badge. Rheem also offers the strongest conditional replacement warranty in the industry on Prestige models.

FAQ

Common Questions About Rheem

Are Rheem and Ruud the same?+

Yes, identical equipment. Different paint, different dealer channel, often different pricing in the same market — buy whichever is cheaper.

How does Rheem compare to Carrier?+

Rheem is typically 10–20% less expensive than Carrier for similar specs. Carrier has the edge on Infinity-level humidity control; Rheem has the edge on value.

Is the EcoNet thermostat reliable?+

Yes, generally. Earlier 1.x firmware had connectivity issues; current EcoNet 2.x is solid.

How long do Rheem systems last?+

12–18 years with annual maintenance is typical. Watch the indoor evaporator coil for formicary leaks at 7–10 years.

What's the most common Rheem repair?+

Capacitors at year 5–8, then indoor evaporator coil leaks at year 7–10.

Need Rheem service today?
