The 7 Most Common Carrier Repair Issues
Capacitors lead the list — but here's the whole top seven and what each one costs to fix.
After 1,000+ Carrier service calls across the Treasure Coast, the same seven failures account for ~85% of our repair workload. Here they are, ranked.
1. Failed dual-run capacitor
The single most common Carrier repair anywhere in Florida. The 370V/440V dual-run capacitor in the condenser starts the compressor and runs the fan motor. Florida heat cooks them in 5–8 years. Symptom: outdoor unit hums but won't start, or fan spins but compressor doesn't. Repair: $200–$450 installed.
2. Pitted contactor
The contactor is the relay that energizes the compressor when the thermostat calls for cooling. Silver contacts pit from arcing and lightning. Eventually they weld closed (unit runs constantly) or fail open (won't run). Repair: $250–$500 installed.
3. Condenser fan motor
The outdoor fan motor (HC39GE237 / HC39GE242 on common Carrier models) spins thousands of hours a year in 140°F cabinet temps. Bearings wear, windings short. Symptom: hot air blowing off the top of the cabinet, fan stopped or wobbling. Repair: $550–$950 installed.
4. Blower motor / ECM module
Inside the air handler, the blower motor moves conditioned air through the ducts. On older PSC motors, it's a $400–$700 repair. On Carrier Infinity / Performance variable-speed ECM motors, the module alone runs $700–$1,300.
5. Refrigerant leak
Most common at brazed joints, Schrader cores, and TXV connections. Symptom: poor cooling, ice on the line set, system runs constantly. We find leaks with electronic detectors and UV dye. Repair varies wildly — a Schrader core is $200, a coil leak is a coil replacement ($1,500–$3,500).
6. Clogged drain line / float switch trip
Algae and biofilm clog the primary drain. The float switch trips to prevent ceiling damage. Symptom: system shuts off, thermostat dark or showing safety message. Repair: $175–$375 to clear and treat.
7. Control board failure
Lightning surge, age, or moisture. Symptom on Infinity: thermostat shows a fault code (45, 110, 178, 184). Symptom on standard: nothing happens when thermostat calls. Repair: $500–$1,400 depending on board.
